Si on arrive tous à juger du bon sens ou de la bêtise d’une personne… D’autant plus facilement qu’elle nous plaît ou non… Mais qu’en est-il d’une évaluation objective de l’intelligence ? Bref, comment mesure-t-on scientifiquement l’intelligence ?
L’origine des tests d’intelligence
Les débuts de cette histoire démarrent avec le premier test de mesure de l’intelligence, dès 1905.
Alfred Binet et Théodore Simon proposent alors le test Binet-Simon. Leur but consistait à estimer le degré de développement intellectuel de l’enfant, afin de les classer et détecter les enfants aux besoins pédagogiques et éducatifs particuliers. Il s’agissait alors de proposer des épreuves de difficulté croissante aux enfants.
Ce test donnait alors un âge mental. Il s’agissait de comparaît les performances de l’enfant au test à des moyennes par âge d’après un échantillonnage préalable.
C’est grâce à ces âges mentaux qu’apparaît très vite le quotient intellectuel, le fameux QI. William Stern propose de calculer le QI en divisant l’âge mental par l’âge réel et en multipliant le tout par 100. Avec cette méthode, un enfant de 10 ans obtenant un âge mental de 14 ans obtient un QI de 140 ! (14 / 10) ⅹ 100 = 140.
La limite de cette méthode est vite apparue pour une évaluation du QI chez l’adulte. L’intelligence d’un individu adulte est effectivement plus stable dans le temps. Il est par ailleurs difficile de savoir ce qui irait dans le sens d’une plus grande intelligence… Avoir un âge mental de 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 ou 90ans ?
Dès lors, David Wechsler invente une autre façon de calculer un QI, le QI-standard toujours utilisé actuellement. Les tests sont dès leur conception faits pour que les résultats suivent une courbe normale, appelée aussi courbe gaussienne. La loi normale et sa courbe permettent effectivement de modéliser de très nombreux phénomènes naturels issus de plusieurs événements aléatoires, tels que l’anatomie humaine ou les jeux de hasard – pourquoi pas aussi l’intelligence ?
Dès lors, il garde comme valeur moyenne le QI de 100 de Stern, fixe un écart-type de 15 et continue à classer les performances des personnes suivant leur QI. Il n’y a alors plus de lien entre QI et âge mental, cette méthode peut donc être aussi utilisée chez l’adulte. Autre nouveauté, Wechsler propose d’utiliser cette méthode pour se faire une idée du niveau de performance des personnes testés sur les différents exercices qui composent le test de QI.
Les tests de QI d’aujourd’hui
Aujourd’hui encore, les tests de QI utilisés lors de bilans psychométriques fonctionnent sur ce principe : ils donnent des indices standards avec une moyenne de 100 et des notes standards avec une moyenne de 10.
Évidemment, les tests ont depuis été mis à jour, tant dans leur contenu qu’en ce qui concerne l’échantillon de référence pris. Aujourd’hui, le WPPSI dans sa version numéro 4 est utilisé entre 2 et 7ans, le WISC-5 s’applique aux enfants de 6 à quasi 17ans et le WAIS-4 s’utilise à partir de 16ans.
Mais finalement, le QI mesure plus la réussite scolaire que l’intelligence. Le QI reste effectivement l’un des meilleurs prédicteurs statistiques de la réussite ou de l’échec scolaire de l’enfant et de l’adolescent. Mais son pouvoir prédicteur reste à relativiser : il semble le moins pire, mais il n’est pas pour autant très précis puisque les corrélations entre le QI et la réussite académiques ne sont que de l’ordre de 0.50.
Beaucoup considèrent que cette limite relève d’une focalisation excessive des tests de QI sur l’abstraction et la logique, une des composantes parmi d’autres de l’intelligence. C’est pourquoi les psychologues considèrent que le nombre de fonctions mesurées dans les tests de QI est trop limité pour rendre compte de l’efficience de quelqu’un.
Intelligences multiples et compétences cognitives
Howard Gardner est sans doute le plus connu des défenseurs de la théorie des intelligences multiples. Il décrit 9 formes d’intelligence, aux noms variables suivant les auteurs qui les ont repris.
- Verbo-linguistique
- Fluide ou logico-mathématique
- Visuo-spatiale
- Intra-personnelle (capacité d’introspection et de métacognition)
- Interpersonnelle (intelligence sociale)
- Corporelle-kinesthésique
- Musicale
- Naturaliste (appréhender et être sensible à la nature)
- Spirituelle (habileté à à se questionner sur le sens et l’origine des choses)
Pour ma part, j’y ajoute une intelligence créative ainsi qu’une intelligence concrète ou pragmatique.
On comprend aisément le sens de la première. La seconde correspond à des habilités pragmatiques et pratiques. Il m’est en effet souvent arrivé de constater des décalages entre un haut niveau d’accès à l’abstrait et une inadaptation pour des petites choses concrètes. J’ai en tête notamment un conférencier explicitant des concepts très abstraits qu’il maîtrisait à merveille. Ses quelques feuilles de notes ne faisaient que tomber de son pupitre. Et je me souviens avoir souri intérieurement se dépatouiller sans penser mettre un objet un peu lourd pour tout simplement les bloquer.
Aussi, la vitesse, la mémoire, l’autocontrôle et l’attention sont des compétences cognitives nécessaires au développement et à la mise en œuvre de l’intelligence, quelque qu’elle soit. Ces fonctions cognitives transversales ne sont que peu mesurées par les tests de QI. Elles concourent pourtant à ce que tout un chacun appelle ‘intelligence’.
Le bien-être psychologique et la motivation
L’autre limite des tests de QI relève aussi du fait que l’utilisation de nos possibilités intellectuelles est très dépendante de note état d’esprit, notre sécurité psycho-affective et notre motivation. Or, ces composantes ne sont pas prises en compte dans les tests usuels. Ces éléments sont d’ailleurs d’une telle complexité, qu’aucun outil ne permet d’en rendre compte.
Vers une approche plus écologique de l’intelligence
En psychologie, on parle d’approche ‘écologique’ quand il s’agit de s’éloigner d’une situation de test en laboratoire. Ce qui compte alors c’est de se rapprocher de ce qui se passe vraiment dans la vraie vie.
Ainsi, à défaut de pouvoir mesurer pleinement les différentes composantes participant à l’efficience intellectuelle, les psychologues se sont tournés vers des outils tentant de rendre compte des comportements intelligents que fait la personne évaluée en vrai. On parle alors de fonctionnement adaptatif. Cette notion entre maintenant d’ailleurs dans les critères permettant d’évoquer une déficience intellectuelle.
Cette adaptation est mesurée à travers des questionnaires transmis aux proches de la personne évaluée. Il s’agit de savoir si la personne fait ceci ou cela. Et non plus de savoir si elle pourrait faire ceci ou cela.
La limite de ces échelles relève du caractère pas toujours suffisamment objectif des réponses données. Aussi, ces questionnaires sont essentiellement développés pour apprécier le fonctionnement adaptatif de personnes avec troubles neurocognitifs et/ou psychiatriques. Cela est actuellement peu pertinent pour appréhender le haut niveau intellectuel. Enfin, ces échelles ne sont que peu adaptées pour un public jeune. Effectivement, en terme de savoir faire autonome, un enfant fait encore peu de chose. De fait, cet outil n’est que peu pertinent chez les enfants avec déficience intellectuelle légère ou modérée ; il devient par contre très intéressant dès l’adolescence.
En conclusion
Comment mesure-t-on scientifiquement l’intelligence ? Très mal ! Mais les outils actuels restent néanmoins pertinents dès lors qu’ils sont couplés entre eux et mis en lien avec les éléments cliniques.
